WHY GIVE THIS TRAINING?
Some managers may wonder why they are receiving more EEO training.
More and more frequently, employees are being deposed in discrimination suits and asked about an agency's training program. Often, even though they attended, they do not remember anything about the training.
Only if the participants remember the training will it have any beneficial effect-from either a legal or training perspective. ("Training becomes important step to avoid liability," Ellen McLaughlin and Carol Merchasin, National Law Journal, January 29, 2001)
The principal objective of an EEO program is to create a discrimination-free work environment, shaped by sound and objective management and leadership practices that support effective communication and facilitate early resolution of issues.
The broader mission of the Equal Employment Opportunity program is eradicating discrimination in the workplace.
Many government agencies have many grievances and EEO complaints. Institutions need to view compliance with federal non-discrimination statutes as a continuous work in progress as the law in these areas evolves.
Eliminating and preventing discrimination is part of risk management.
